How to Find Your Life Path Number, Step by Step
Five minutes, a piece of paper, your birthday. Here is how it works.
The Method, in One Sentence
Reduce the month, day, and year of your birth each to a single digit (don't reduce 11, 22, or 33). Add the three together. Reduce again.

What to Do With Master Numbers (11, 22, 33)
The exception to the "always reduce" rule is master numbers. If the month, the day, the reduced year, or any intermediate sum equals 11, 22, or 33, stop reducing it.
For example, if you were born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11. Don't reduce 11 to 2. Use 11 in your sum. The final total might still reduce past 11, that's fine, but treat the 11 as a single unit while it lives in your calculation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Reducing 11, 22, or 33 to a single digit. If you reduce 11 → 2 inside your calculation, you may miss a master number Life Path entirely.
- Adding the whole birth date at once instead of segment-by-segment. Some older sources teach the all-at-once method. The segmented method (used here) is the modern standard and preserves master numbers more reliably.
- Forgetting to reduce the year fully. 1985 → 23 → 5. Two reductions, not one.
- Using your name instead of your birth date. That's a different number, the Expression Number. The Life Path comes only from your birth date.
Two Methods, Quick Note
There is a long-running debate about whether to reduce each part of the date first (the method I just showed) or to add every digit of the birth date together in one pass. For most birthdays, both methods give the same answer. For some, they diverge, usually because the all-at-once method skips a master number that the segmented method preserves.
I use the segmented method. So does our calculator. If a reputable source you trust uses the other method and you get a different answer, both are defensible, but they describe slightly different things.
