What Are the Core Numbers in Numerology?
Numerology uses several different calculations, each answering a different question. The core numbers are the five that most practitioners consider foundational: the Life Path, the Expression, the Soul Urge, the Personality, and the Birthday. Each is calculated differently. Each describes a different layer of who a person is.
The value of calculating all five together is that the interesting information is rarely in any single number. It is in how they align, and where they do not. A Life Path and a Soul Urge pointing in the same direction describes a person whose life tends to feel coherent. A Life Path and a Soul Urge pulling apart describes a person with a recurring internal tension. That tension does not mean something is wrong. It is the structure of the thing.
A bonus sixth number, the Maturity Number, is calculated from the Life Path plus the Expression. It describes who you grow into in the second half of life.

How the Core Numbers Are Calculated
Two calculation methods cover all five core numbers. The date-based numbers (Life Path, Birthday) use your birth date. The name-based numbers (Expression, Soul Urge, Personality) use the Pythagorean letter chart below.
In the Pythagorean system, each letter maps to a number from 1 to 9. Master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are preserved rather than reduced. For name-based calculations, use the full name as it appears on your birth certificate, including any middle names.

How the Core Numbers Work Together
The core numbers are not redundant. They describe different layers of the same person, and the most useful information comes from reading them in relation to each other.
The Life Path and the Soul Urge are the most revealing pair. The Life Path describes what your life moves you toward. The Soul Urge describes what you actually want underneath. When they align, a person tends to feel that their life fits them. When they diverge, there is often a pattern of working toward one thing while wanting another. A Life Path 4 with a Soul Urge 5 describes someone whose life rewards structure and patience while they quietly want freedom and variety. That is not a flaw in the chart. It is accurate information about where the friction will be.
The Expression and the Life Path describe two different things: what you are equipped to do versus what your life calls for. The overlap and the gaps between them shape most of the professional tensions people encounter.
Core Numbers vs Timing Numbers
The core numbers are fixed. They come from your birth date and birth name and do not change. They describe the permanent blueprint: who you are built to be, what you want, the impression you make, where you are headed.
The timing numbers describe where you are in your current cycle. Your Personal Year, Personal Month, and Life Path phases change each year and each month. They describe the terrain of right now, not who you are. Both matter, but they answer different questions.
Which Core Number Is Most Important?
The Life Path carries the most weight. It is the single most foundational number in the chart, describing the patterns and tendencies that run through an entire lifetime. The Expression Number is second. Both are more foundational than the three name-based numbers because they come from sources that feel more fixed: the date you were born and the totality of your name. That said, for many people the Soul Urge reading is the most personally accurate, because it names what they want rather than what they do.
