What Is a Life Path Number?

Your Life Path Number is the most-discussed number in numerology. It is calculated from the day you were born and stays the same for your entire life. It is meant to describe core patterns: how you tend to make decisions, what kinds of work feel meaningful to you, the relationships you gravitate toward, and the lessons that seem to come up over and over.

It is not a prediction or a personality test. It is closer to a starting point, a frame you can hold up against your own experience to see if anything resonates.

How the Calculation Works

You take the month, the day, and the year, reduce each one to a single digit by adding their digits, then add those three single digits together. If the final number is two digits, you reduce again. There is one exception: the master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are not reduced.

EXAMPLE, born 17 March 1992

Month3
Day1 + 7 = 8
Year1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
Sum3 + 8 + 3 = 14 → 1 + 4 = Life Path 5

Master Numbers, 11, 22, 33

If your month, day, or any intermediate sum equals 11, 22, or 33, you don't reduce it further. These are considered master numbers. They carry the energy of the single-digit number they would reduce to (11 → 2, 22 → 4, 33 → 6), but at a higher and more demanding frequency.

Not everyone with a master number lives it out fully. Many people with Life Path 11 operate more like a sensitive Life Path 2 for most of their lives. That is fine. The master number is more of a ceiling than a guarantee.

Two Calculation Methods, Quick Note

Some traditions sum the digits of the full birth date all at once (instead of reducing month, day, year separately first). For most birthdates, both methods give the same answer. For a small number of dates, the methods diverge, usually because the all-at-once method skips over a master number that the segmented method preserves. The method used on this site is the segmented one, which most modern numerologists consider standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What If My Birth Year Doesn't Reduce Cleanly?
It always reduces, you just may need to reduce twice. For 1985 you go 1+9+8+5 = 23, then 2+3 = 5. Unless you hit 11, 22, or 33 along the way, you keep reducing.
What If I Get 11, 22, or 33?
Congratulations, you have a master number. They are rare and demanding. Visit our pages on Life Path 11, Life Path 22, or Life Path 33 to read more.
Can My Life Path Number Change?
No. It is calculated from your birth date and stays the same. Other numerological numbers can shift (expression number, personal year), but the Life Path is fixed.
Is This Number More Important Than My Sun Sign?
It's a different system. Astrology and numerology don't compete, they describe different things. People who find one useful often find the other useful for different reasons.
What Should I Do With My Number?
Read the page for that number. See if it resonates. Notice which parts you nod at and which parts you resist, both reactions are information. The number is a mirror, not an instruction.
