What Is a Soul Urge Number?

Your Soul Urge Number comes from the vowels in your full birth name. It points to what drives you underneath the choices other people can see, the pull you might only admit to if pressed, sometimes called the Heart's Desire Number.

Take a Life Path 8, someone whose career keeps moving toward achievement and authority, whose Soul Urge is 2. On paper they are climbing. Underneath, what they want is a quieter kind of closeness, and the gap between the two numbers explains more about them than either number does on its own.

The Soul Urge names the wanting. It does not describe the actions you take to get there.

How This Calculator Works

Enter your first, middle, and last name exactly as they appear on your birth certificate. The calculator drops every consonant, converts each remaining vowel to its Pythagorean value, adds the vowels within each name part, reduces each part, then adds the parts together and reduces once more. Master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are kept rather than reduced further.

Why We Count Y as a Consonant, and What Changes If You Count It as a Vowel

Numerologists disagree about Y. In the Pythagorean system this site uses, Y is a consonant by default. Some practitioners switch it to a vowel when it carries the only vowel sound in a syllable, as in Lynn or Bryn. We count Y as a consonant across the board, for both the Soul Urge and the Personality Number, so the two numbers stay in the relationship they are meant to describe.

The choice changes the result. Take the name Kyle. Counting Y as a consonant leaves only the E, worth 5, so that name part reduces to 5. Counting Y as a vowel adds Y's value of 7 to the E's 5, for a total of 12, which reduces to 3. Same letters, two different Soul Urge numbers, depending on one rule most calculators never state out loud.

If you have worked out your Soul Urge Number somewhere else and landed on a different digit, this is very often why. Recalculate by hand with Y treated as a vowel and see whether the two results line up before assuming either calculator got it wrong.
