This is the number people rarely talk about, and the one that often explains the gap between what someone is doing and what they really want. A person with a Life Path 8, all achievement and authority, who has a Soul Urge 2 spends their career accumulating influence while privately longing for a quieter kind of connection. The two numbers pull in different directions, and recognizing that pull tends to be useful rather than discouraging.
The Soul Urge is the interior. It describes the motivation behind the choices, not the choices themselves.
Soul Urge Number or Heart's Desire — Are They the Same?
Yes. Soul Urge Number and Heart's Desire Number are two names for the same calculation, made from the vowels of your full birth name. Different numerologists favor different terms. The method and the meaning are identical.
Why the Soul Urge Number Uses Only Vowels
In traditional numerology, the vowels of a name carry its inner sound, the resonance underneath the spoken structure. The consonants form the outer shape that others hear first. This is the logic of the split: vowels describe the inner self and motivation, consonants describe the outer impression measured by the Personality Number. The same name read three ways gives three different numbers, each answering a different question.
How to Calculate Your Soul Urge Number
Take your full birth name. From each part, keep only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and drop the consonants. Convert each vowel to its Pythagorean value, add them within each name part, reduce each part, then add the parts and reduce once more. Master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are kept.

Is Y a Vowel in Numerology?
This is the most common question about the Soul Urge calculation, and the answer is: usually not. In standard Pythagorean numerology, Y is treated as a consonant by default. Some practitioners count Y as a vowel when it is the only vowel sound in a syllable, as in a name like "Lynn" or "Bryn." The important thing is consistency. Whatever rule you apply, apply it the same way to the Soul Urge and the Personality so the two numbers stay coherent. This calculator treats Y as a consonant throughout, which keeps the results predictable.
Soul Urge Number vs Expression Number
Both come from your name, split into opposite parts. The Expression uses all the letters and describes what you are built to do. The Soul Urge uses only the vowels and describes what you actually want. A person can be built for one thing and quietly want another. An Expression 8 built for leadership with a Soul Urge 6 that wants home and care describes someone who succeeds at scale while privately measuring their life by the people in it. Reading both numbers together shows where ambition and desire agree and where they do not.
